Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I do this?

Carbon is bad for the environment; your fleet is emitting carbon into the environment every day. The first step is to actively reduce the emissions by implementing an effective fleet management solution that enables better driving practices.

For those emissions that cannot be reduced, there is the option of offsetting. Carbon offsetting involves investment in certified environmental projects that are actively aiding the reduction of carbon and the replenishment of healthy gases.

Why should my business report its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions?

By reporting your greenhouse gas emissions you are taking an active step in resolving the problem of climate change. This important step demonstrates to your clients, potential clients and other industry players that you are environmentally aware and accountable, giving you a competitive edge in the market in which you operate.

It is already compulsory for the top fifty companies on each continent to report on their GHG emissions. For smaller businesses, it is only a matter of time before legislation is put in place, so be proactive and plan for the inevitable.

Petrol versus Diesel?

Per litre, diesel produces more carbon than petrol; however, less fuel is used when driving. Diesel cars therefore produce less carbon dioxide.

How do we calculate a fleet's carbon footprint?

In order to calculate the carbon footprint of a fleet, the quantity and type of fuel used over the past year must be known. This data is obtained from on-board fleet management systems, enabling us to calculate the carbon footprint of that fleet. The service is offered free of charge for customers who already have a MiX Telematics system installed.

Once obtained, we calculate the tons of carbon your fleet has produced. This is done through scientifically proven calculations that reveal the volume of greenhouse gases released per litre of fuel.

Do I have to report on GHG emissions annually?

Yes. In order to claim that your company or your company’s fleet is carbon neutral, you would need to annually report your carbon footprint (or fleet’s carbon footprint) and present proof of subsequent carbon offsets that have been purchased.

Does all my fleet have to have MiX Telematics devices installed?

No. We are able to help you to offset your entire fleet, provided we can access all the required fuel data. The service is, however, offered free of charge for customers who already have a MiX Telematics system installed.

If I purchase offsets through MiX Telematics, are they valid if my entire company is assessed?

Yes. MiX Telematics only deals with certified carbon offsets of the highest standard. If you have offset your fleet with MiX Telematics, that portion of your operation is officially carbon neutral for the given period.

If during this period you wish to offset your company’s entire carbon footprint, your fleet’s footprint will be deducted from the total and will not need to be offset again.

How expensive is a carbon offset?

The price of carbon offsets fluctuates, depending on supply and demand. They average is around 10 Euros per offset, depending on the project itself, the location of the project and the market.

The table below indicates some rough estimates of the annual costs* involved, based on fleet size and type.

* €10 an offset,**7L/100km, ***18L/100km, ****50L/100km

Number of Vehicles Estimated cost (€) to offset passenger vehicles** Estimated cost (€) to offset light goods vehicle*** Estimated cost (€) to offset large goods vehicle****
1 €20 €45 €1 500
10 €200 €450 €15 000
100 €2 000 €4 500 €150 000
